SYNOPSIS

In 1953, as the Korean War approaches an armistice, the authorities order the prisoners of war to stage a play as part of a political effort to bring the war to an end.

Captain Kim Seon-nam, a staunch anti-communist who despises anyone he considers a Communist, is appointed to direct the production. But the prisoners assigned to him can neither read nor understand the theatre. Instead, they do little more than insist that they are not Communists and plead their innocence.

After countless difficulties, the production gradually begins to take shape. As the prisoners come together through rehearsals, Kim Seon-nam begins to believe that the play may finally unite them.

Then the war erupts again.

A new order arrives: all prisoners are to be executed.

Kim Seon-nam is torn between duty and conscience. Should he obey the order? Or should he keep his promise to the prisoners?

In the end, the prison camp is left buried beneath heaps of corpses, with Kim Seon-nam standing alone. He cries out his final question:

To be, or not to be—that is the question.

To die is to sleep.
And if we sleep, we may dream.
But what if those dreams are nightmares?
How terrible would they be?

A dream from which there is no awakening.
A nightmare from which there is no awakening.

SYNOPSIS

- 6.25전쟁이 휴전으로 분위기가 무르익어가는 1953년. 한국전쟁의 종전을 이루기 위한 정치적 목적으로 포로들로 연극을 공연하라는 각하의 명령이 내려온다.

빨갱이라면 치를 떠는 김선남 대위가 연출을 맡게 되지만, 글을 읽지도, 연극을 이해하지도 못하는 포로들만 모여, 자신은 빨갱이가 아니라며, 억울함을 호소하기만 한다. 우여곡절 끝에 제대로 모습이 갖추어지고, 연극 연습으로 하나가 되어간다고 느낄 무렵, 다시 재기된 전쟁으로 인하여, 모든 포로들을 총살시키라는 명령이 내려오고, 김선남은 고뇌한다.

명령을 따를 것인가? 약속을 지킬 것인가? 결국, 시체더미들만 쌓여진 포로수용소에 김선남만 홀로 남아, 마지막 절규를 외친다. 죽느냐, 사느냐! 그것이 문제로다.

죽는다는 것은 잠든다는 것. 잠이 들면, 꿈을 꾸겠지. 그 꿈이 악몽이라면, 얼마나 지독한가?
