SYNOPSIS

In the present day, Jeom-rye appears at the unveiling ceremony of a statue commemorating the victims of the Japanese military’s system of sexual slavery. As she gazes at the statue, she is overcome with tears. The girl depicted in the statue is not only a reflection of herself, but also of the friends she knew as a young girl.

Having lived for decades concealing the painful memories of her past, Jeom-rye is drawn back into her memories as she stands before the statue.

In the winter of 1941, Jeom-rye and Young-ja are deceived by Mr. Kim and taken to China for work, without knowing that they are being sent to a military brothel as comfort women.

The girls who had arrived in China before them tell Jeom-rye and Young-ja how they might escape: if they marry a Chinese man, they cannot be kept there.

Desperate to escape, Jeom-rye attempts to seduce Zhang Wei, a young Chinese medical student responsible for examining the girls at the brothel. But Zhang Wei has fallen in love with Young-ja.

At that moment, Masato overhears the conversation between Jeom-rye and Zhang Wei and attempts to kill Jeom-rye. Young-ja tries to stop him and, in the ensuing struggle, accidentally kills Masato. The shock drives her into madness.

But Young-ja herself soon falls victim to Mr. Kim, who kills her with a knife.

Seventy years pass.

In the present day, Jeom-rye still visits the statue, carrying persimmons as she does each year. Standing before the statue, she is reunited with the friends of her youth.

시놉시스

현재, 소녀상 제막식 현장에 나타난 점례는 소녀상을 보며 눈물을 흘린다. 그 소녀상은 자신이기도 하며, 어릴 적 친구들이기 때문이다. 고통스러웠던 과거를 숨기고 살았던 점례는 소녀상을 보며 과거를 회상한다.

1941년 겨울, 점례와 영자는 김사장에게 속아 위안부인지도 모르고 일을 하러 중국에 간다. 이들보다 먼저 중국에 간 소녀들은 그들에게 위안소에서 빠져나갈 수 있는 방도를 알려준다. 중국 사람과 결혼하면 그곳에 잡아둘 수 없다고...

이에 점례는 위안소에서 소녀들의 검진을 맡는 젊은 중국인 의학도 장웨이를 유혹하려 하지만, 장웨이는 영자를 마음에 두고 있다. 이 순간 점례와 장웨이의 대화를 엿들은 마사토는 점례를 처단 하려 하고, 영자는 그런 마사토를 제지하다 우발적으로 마사토를 죽이고 미쳐버린다. 그러나 영자도 곧 김사장의 칼에 베어 죽는다.

70년이 흐른 지금, 점례는 오늘도 곳감을 들고 소녀상을 찾아간다. 그리고 과거 친구들과 재회한다. "영자야 미안해!"
